Kicking off Heart Month!

February 7th was a jam-packed day filled with a lot of heart!

We began by supporting families facing #CongenitalHeartDisease at the Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital. In lieu of CHD Awareness Week, we wanted to support parents of our neonatal heart warriors through food and a relaxing massage session. We hoped to provide a momentary comfort as caregivers and parents go through trying times as they await results, and just go through this process day by day.

We provided Hu Kitchen healthy and hearty meals that afternoon for all our caregivers and NYC Healing Hands provided a relaxing massage session! Thank you once again to our staff at the Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital NICU, our corporate partners who support our community events and parents/caregivers who make this event possible!

After wrapping up at NYP-Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital, we traveled over to Mount Sinai Kravis Children’s Hospital for their 32nd Annual Mount Sinai Valentine’s Heart Party!

Group PicOur very own Elmo joined in the fun and festivities as we welcomed pediatric heart surgery patients for a reunion to “celebrate life” along with their parents and physicians.

Harboring Hearts joined Project Sunshine to truly witness a day full of smiles as these children ate, danced, and enjoyed the day!

From our heart to all of yours, we can not express our joy in being able to put these events together! If your organization would like to partner with us to support events as such – like/follow us on facebooktwitter and instagram!

Care Packages at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore

January 26th, 2018– The entire staff, from The Bronx Center for Science and Math, spent the day with Harboring Hearts creating care packages for children in the PICU at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore.

Social workers, Math/Science/History/English teachers all embraced a child like excitement as they helped with arts, crafts, games and face-painting for the children we serve.

CHAM 1They set up care-packages filled with coloring pages, activity books as well as hand-crafted night lights, personalized flower pots with seeds to plant, and picture frames to give out to our pediatric heart patients as we all await Spring!

Throughout the day, there were smiles all around as they designed and decorated their own masterpiece crafts to spread to the joy to the children.

Thank you once again to all the teachers who came out as well as our social workers and staff at Montefiore. This day wouldn’t have been possible without you!

December Events with Harboring Hearts

Harboring Hearts is proud to mark the month of December with 3 Hospital Events!

#JustDoIt with Harboring Hearts

We kicked off this month’s celebrations with our Holiday Party at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM) on December 6th. Harboring Hearts partnered with Nike to help local elementary school children learn the heart benefits of being active through various sports related crafts. They helped students make visors, to protect them from the sun, to making their own footballs, basketball hoops, and even learning how to check their own heartbeat once they exercise.

They came in with an open mind and curiosity to engage and learn about having a healthy heart through the many sports they heard about. By the end of the day, they left with smiles as wide as their faces.

But the real show stopper was having the opportunity to dance their heart out with Elmo.

At the end of the day, the students all made a vow to be more active and be keep a healthy heart.

We want to thank CHAM and our volunteers from Nike once again for helping to make this event a success and creating a lasting impression about heart health and exercise!

Parents Support Groups for Heart Champions!

Heart surgery is a hard conversation for adults, needless to say how much harder it is for expecting parents and parents of newborns, who are preparing for such a big procedure. Harboring Hearts aims to lift this burden by providing expecting families with a support system of parents at different spectrum of this process. By fostering conversation among parents, we help provide confidence and reassurance that though this may not be easy, they are not alone.

We want to thank the amazing staff, faculty and our amazing parents at Mount Sinai and Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital who made it out and made this an inspirational and supportive time for those who attended.

We want to invite all of you to continue impacting the lives of our heart patients and their families through the activities at Harboring Hearts! Harboring Hearts NYC Half

Harboring Hearts is proud to join the New York Road Runners at the 2018 United Airlines NYC Half for the 5th year in a row! Every year we have been able to recruit 5 dedicated volunteers who train and fund-raise for this race to provide our heart patients, both adults and children, the opportunity to “run” in their own race called life by providing them with much needed emotional and financial support. The funds that are raised through this half marathon go towards providing our community of heart patients and their caregivers with housing, transportation, food, and emotional support programs.

And without further adieu, I would like to extend the warmest invite for you to join Harboring Hearts in the #UnitedNYCHalf on March 18, 2018!

As a member of our team, you commit to running and raising $2500 to support our work. In exchange, Harboring Hearts covers your race fee, provides swag and lots of love on our blog and social media.

Harboring Hearts is thankful to all those who have supported us in the past. Last year, we were able to raise $17,850 to provide our heart patients and caregivers the ability to keep going. With all your support this year, we’re certain we can continue to help our community fight in their battle!

Making Music at NYP

On November 8th, Harboring Hearts was proud to set the stage for a musical celebration during our latest Heart Party Event featuring our pediatric heart patients at Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital!

Making Music

Kids and their parents took their time making paper-cup drums, accessorizing it, as well as bringing out art through coloring and activities galore. They were even joined by a special yellow friend from 123 Sesame Street…Big Bird, who also joined in the festivity!

The day was filled with music, laughter and creativity, which has the power to promote overall health and well-being to both children and their family!

Making Music 2

Once again, we want to thank Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital for being a wonderful partner helping us bring joy to our potential future musicians and artists!

Franco Gutierrez Hope 4 Hearts Day

We were thrilled to celebrate our latest Hope 4 Hearts Day honoring little Franco Itzep Gutierrez and his family! On October 20, 2017 we kicked off the day with a mini photo-shoot. We got to take several pictures of this handsome young man and his wonderful family that they can have as keepsakes to remember this day.

Franco and his sister went right to play when we arrived at Corona Park. They smiled big and posed for all the pictures, but were eagerly waiting to go back and play some more! They continued on the day with dinner at Park Side Restaurant, where they enjoyed more quality family time, sharing a meal and embracing each other’s company.

Shortly after dinner, they went straight to the main entertainment, an evening at circus, Circo Hermanos Vasquez!

Although the day did come to an end, the joy that we saw on the face of Franco and his family carries on. We were thrilled to have made this day possible for Franco and celebrate his heart journey!

IRON (wo)MAN, Jen!

“Sometimes you gotta run before you can walk.” – Tony Stark AKA Ironman.

And that’s exactly what our Ironwoman, Jen, did! Harboring Hearts is proud to introduce our superhero for this month, Jennifer Harwood, who mastered the Ironman on Saturday, October 7th, 2017. And oh ya, she also managed to rank 18th of the 44 women in her age bracket with that same smile on her face.

Not only did she triumphantly complete the Ironman race but she dedicated this race to Harboring Hearts to help us serve heart patients and their families as they go through their own race in their heart health battles. She was able to raise $5,765 to help provide them with financial and emotional support!

Congratulations, Jen! Harboring Hearts is so thankful of people like you who constantly strive to help our heart patients and their families!

We are strong not only because of the support we have from all of our volunteers, and supporters in our Harboring Hearts community, but strong through the hearts that desire to help one another!

“Traveling the World” with Chobani at Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital

On September 26th, Harboring Hearts partnered with Chobani for another fun-filled event at the Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital! I think it’s safe to say that all who attended enjoyed their travel adventure exploring various places from Egypt to Hawaii with the help of our fabulous volunteers from Chobani led by Cynthia Gandolfini.

4031 Harboring Hearts-Chobani-0018Our dedicated volunteers began this tour by giving each of our pediatric heart patients their exclusive passports, which they used as they explored the world with curiosity alongside Curious George. Kids started venturing from table to table, country to country, learning and engaging in different crafts and activities!

But there was no monkeying around. Or maybe just a little bit…4031 Harboring Hearts-Chobani-0184

With such a vibrant atmosphere, it was hard not to feel like a kid again. The smiles on each child’s face stretched out from ear to ear as they made their Chinese Lanterns, ate their heart healthy snacks (provided by Stop and Shop) and let loose with the help of DJ Intake!

Once again, we want to thank all our volunteers and supporters as well as Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital for helping us conduct another event that left a palpable energy among our pediatric heart patients! We hope each ounce of support may help them feel more encouraged as they go on their heart journey.

Candlelight Yoga and Shopping with Harboring Hearts

On August 17, 2017, Harboring Hearts partnered with Outdoor Voices to put on a rejuvenating and splurge worthy yoga and shopping event.

IMG_7313The venue had such a vibrant energy with our participants along with passer-byers, who had the opportunity to purchase incredible activewear from Outdoor Voices. Twenty percent of all these proceeds went towards Harboring Hearts and the families we serve.

We kicked off the evening with some light snacking as well as a little shopping, because what pairs better with wine and cheese than shopping?

After the store closed, we began our Candlelight Yoga Session. Samantha Moriarty, from Yoga Vida, began this session by slowly easing us all into a relaxing state. We were able to pace ourselves and forget about the stress of the week as we escaped into a serene time.

We want to thank Outdoor Voices for partnering with us for this unbelievable event and Samantha for helping to lead this session. I know I speak for those who attended that this was a great addition to our busy day! We also want to give all of our participants a big shout out for making this event a success. Proceeds from the event raised $1,200.75 to provide support for our heart patients, their families, and caregivers!
