Donate Life Awareness Month
April is National Donate Life Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness surrounding organ donation and encouraging everyone to register as organ and tissue donors.
Currently, in the United States, more than 100,000 people are waiting to receive life-saving organ transplants. This includes about 3,500 patients waiting for a heart, 15,000 patients waiting for a liver, and 1,900 pediatric patients waiting for a kidney. Each of these people has family, friends, and loved ones who are also impacted by the need for organ donation.
Organ donation can be a final act of selflessness and generosity that can save up to eight lives. It is also possible to become a living kidney or partial liver donor by entering the National Donate Life Living Donor Registry. In 2020, 5,700 more lives were saved through the generosity of living donors. This type of donation is especially important because people waiting for a kidney transplant represent 80% of people waiting to receive an organ donation.
All of us at Harboring Hearts would like to thank everyone who is currently registered as an organ donor. At HH, we see firsthand the impact being an organ donor can have on the individual receiving the organ but also on the entire family - it changes everyone's life. We would also like to acknowledge and honor donors who have passed as well as their families. Their kindness has given many of our patients a second chance at life.
